Description
The ARB Air Locker Differential (RD132) is a pneumatically activated locking differential designed for the Toyota 8-inch live axle with a 50mm bearing bore, 30-spline shafts measuring 1.31 inches in diameter, and compatibility with all ring-and-pinion ratios. It is available in both front and rear axle configurations and covers select trims across multiple Toyota and Lexus platforms, including the Pickup (1979–1995), 4Runner (1984–2009), Land Cruiser (1990–1997), FJ Cruiser (2007–2009), Tacoma (2016–2023), and Lexus LX450 (1996–1997) — see the fitment section below for the full year-by-year and trim-by-trim breakdown.
IMPORTANT: This differential requires a specific bearing to complete installation. For an 80mm bearing OD, use Timken bearing 32010X (ARB Part Number 160116). For an 83mm bearing OD, use Koyo or SKF bearing TR100802-2 (ARB Part Number 160118). Verify your axle’s bearing OD before ordering. An air compressor is required for operation and is sold separately.
The ARB Air Locker is the world’s premier on-demand traction solution for serious off-road use. Unlike limited-slip differentials or automatic lockers, the Air Locker operates exactly like a conventional open differential during normal driving — with no impact on on-road handling, tire wear, or driveline stress. When traction is needed, a single switch activation locks both axle shafts directly to the ring gear, delivering 100 percent traction to both wheels simultaneously. When unlocked, the unit reverts completely to open differential behavior with no compromise to everyday driveability.
The Air Locker’s advantage lies in its pneumatically operated internal locking mechanism. When the driver activates the system, air pressure engages a locking collar that prevents the differential’s internal gears from rotating independently. This ties both axle shafts directly to the ring gear, eliminating any possibility of wheel spin differential between the two driven wheels. The result is maximum possible torque delivery to both wheels regardless of surface conditions. ARB’s patented timed locking mechanism is engineered for both high engagement strength and ultra-fast unlocking response, so the driver is never caught in a locked state longer than intended.
The RD132 is built from high-strength steel and features a two-piece housing design that minimizes the number of moving parts for maximum long-term reliability. The annular seal is steel-reinforced and elastomer-bonded, engineered to perform across the most extreme temperature ranges encountered in off-road environments worldwide. The Air Locker can be activated at any vehicle speed, giving the driver the flexibility to engage traction control before or during a difficult section without stopping. ARB backs the RD132 with a 5-year warranty.
