The FOX® 981-30-408-L is a Factory Race Series 3.0 x 14in External Bypass (3-Tube) remote reservoir shock, built for the LEFT side of the vehicle, using externally adjustable position-sensitive damping.
IMPORTANT: This part number, 981-30-408-L, is the LEFT side shock only and is sold individually — it is not a pair. The corresponding RIGHT side shock is a separate part number, 981-30-408-R, and must be ordered separately to complete a front or rear pair. Left and right External Bypass shocks are side-specific due to bypass tube and reservoir orientation and are not interchangeable side to side. Extended length is 37.51in and compressed length is 23.6in — confirm these dimensions match your application before ordering.
External Bypass shocks use tubes mounted alongside the shock body, each corresponding to a specific zone of the shock’s stroke, to give externally adjustable, position-sensitive compression damping. This 3-Tube configuration provides three independently tunable compression zones so the shock’s damping curve can be adjusted to match a given vehicle’s weight, terrain, and speed without opening the shock.
FOX® describes this as a revitalized version of its externally adjustable position-sensitive damping architecture, refined for improved performance, durability, and production consistency compared to earlier External Bypass designs.
The shock uses a wire ring bearing design and is finished in FOX® Grey Cerakote® body plating for corrosion resistance. FOX® Factory Race Series suspension products carry FOX®’s Limited One (1) Year Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of original retail purchase.

This is a universal-fit 3.0in x 14in External Bypass (3-Tube) remote reservoir shock intended for off-road and race applications where the builder is fitting the shock to a specific chassis rather than a direct-fit factory application. This is the LEFT side shock only, sold individually — the RIGHT side counterpart is part number 981-30-408-R and must be purchased separately. Do not confuse this 3-Tube configuration with the 4-Tube External Bypass variants (e.g. 981-30-418-R/-L), which are a different part number and tuning range.
